Bracketology 2/27

We are getting close to conference tournament time and the bubble isn’t getting any clearer. Butler has taken themselves out of consideration with a loss against Providence, but Indiana got themselves back in bubble talk with a win against Wisconsin. If they can go 3-2 down the stretch, I think they have a real shot. A 17-16 team in the dance is gross, but they have no bad losses. The end of the 3 line, through the first 2 seeds of the 7 line are the most fluid right now. A lot of really close resumes. These last 3 weeks will be fun!

Kentucky is probably playing some of the best basketball in the country right now. The last 1, first 2 was really close between Tennessee and Kentucky. After yesterday Kentucky is the last 1 easy. Tennessee still has a chance to reclaim, and they have a head to head match-up Saturday. Wofford got a huge Quad 1 win against Furman, essentially assuring them of an at-large bid if they should falter in their conference tournament.

Last night bubble teams did themselves no favors, besides Baylor. Clemson, Indiana, Nebraska, and Alabama all lost. I’ve seen brackets with Indiana in. How do you put a team in that is 13-13, 4-11 in conference and lost 11 of 12 in the tournament? It doesn’t get any easier as they are projected to lose 4 of their next 5. If they can’t win 3 of 5 and a win in the tournament, their bubble will burst.

Kentucky absolutely put it on Tennessee yesterday. It moved Tennessee down to the last #1 seed, but not quite enough to move Kentucky up in their spot. There match-up in Knoxville could be the determining factor for the last #1 seed. This is really important because they both would have a huge advantage if they are in the Louisville regional. I’m higher on Wofford than most. They need to win at Furman next Saturday for chance at a top 8 seed.

Eventually Oklahoma is going to have to win some conference games to get in. If they finish 4 games under .500 in the conference I’m not sure how you put them in without a run in the conference tourney.

Bracketology (1st After NET release)

The committee released their first 16 on Saturday morning. Very few surprises, and most had 15 of 16, and rankings weren’t alarming by any means. Houston and Nevada were the teams we were all waiting to see, and I thought they fairly ranked. Duke put an exclamation point on their #1 overall seed with a win at Virginia

I was excited as an Illinois State fan to be able to put them into my bracket. Unfortunately, it only lasted one game as they laid an egg and Loyola is back in as my Missouri Valley team. Excited for Saturday when we will get our first look at the committee’s top 16. Will change a lot of formulas, finally seeing how they use NET.
